Troubleshooting

How do I access the water chamber?

Your CoffeeJack may arrive with the water chamber fully closed, making the base appear to be solid.

Simply turn the handle anticlockwise approximately 24 turns to fully open the chamber.

I have a “new machine” smell. Do I need to use a cleaner?

No. Simply rinse your CoffeeJack thoroughly with clean water before first use.

Do not use vinegar or chemical cleaners.

Any slight manufacturing odour will normally disappear after making your first two or three coffees. If you are particularly sensitive to it, simply discard the first few coffees while dialling in your grinder.

I’m not getting any (or much) pressure on the gauge.

The most common cause is that your coffee has not been ground finely enough.

Refer to the troubleshooting flowchart. Most grinders need to be set close to their finest espresso settings—typically much finer than you would use for a conventional domestic espresso machine.

My coffee is extracting very quickly and tastes watery.

Your grind is too coarse.

Refer to the troubleshooting flowchart and adjust your grinder slightly finer.

The handle is very difficult to turn, the pressure is very high, and little or no coffee is coming through.

Your grind is too fine.

Adjust your grinder slightly coarser and try again.

My pressure gauge has water inside it and no longer works.

This usually indicates that the gauge has been significantly over-pressurised and the Bourdon tube has failed.

Replacement gauges are available from the CoffeeJack website.

What grinder do you recommend?

We don’t recommend specific brands or models, but we strongly recommend a quality burr grinder (either flat or conical) with very fine adjustment steps—ideally around 8–12 microns per click.

The finer the adjustment increments, the easier it will be to dial in your CoffeeJack accurately.

My CoffeeJack is leaking around the portafilter.

This is usually caused by one of the following:

• Check that the shower screen is correctly seated inside the black gasket, with the smooth face outward and the sharper edge fully located in the gasket groove.
• Ensure you haven’t overfilled the basket. A typical dose is around 18 g, although darker roasts generally require slightly less coffee, while lighter roasts may require slightly more. If you use a puck screen, remember to leave sufficient room for it.
• Make sure the portafilter screw is fully tightened to compress the gasket evenly. Take care not to cross-thread it during assembly.

Do I need to use a puck screen?

No. A puck screen is not essential.

However, it helps keep the shower screen and water chamber much cleaner, reducing the amount of routine cleaning required.

If you use one, simply reduce your coffee dose slightly to allow space for it.

I’ve bought a stand, but my CoffeeJack doesn’t fit.

As explained on the website, the stand also requires the Stand Adapter, which is sold separately.

I have the Stand Adapter but can’t find my dosing funnel.

Turn the Stand Adapter upside down.

You just found it! The dosing funnel and stand adapter are the same product.

TOP TIP: This product press fits inside the portafilter holder for easy transport.

I have my dosing funnel, but I’m missing the Stand Adapter.

Turn the Stand Adapter upside down.

You just found it! The dosing funnel and stand adapter are the same product.

TOP TIP: This product press fits inside the portafilter holder for easy transport.

I’m struggling to fit my Pressensor or install the battery.

Top Tip: Fit the Pressensor onto your CoffeeJack before removing the waterproof cap.

To remove the cap, either:

• carefully lever it off with a small flat-bladed screwdriver, ensuring you lift only the cap—not the body of the Pressensor; or
• hook a small Allen key under the edge of the cap and gently lever it upwards.

I’ve fitted my Pressensor, but water is getting into the gears.

The waterproof cap is a friction fit, so it doesn’t always provide enough grip to fully tighten the Pressensor.

To ensure a watertight seal:

1. Screw the Pressensor fully onto the CoffeeJack.
2. Remove the waterproof cap.
3. Hold the seal firmly at the base of the Pressensor.
4. Use a screwdriver in the slot at the bottom of the pressure tube to tighten the Pressensor fully.
5. Replace the waterproof cap.

When correctly fitted, the top of the cap should sit slightly below the top rim of the CoffeeJack body.

How often should I service my CoffeeJack?

Your CoffeeJack is supplied with the piston screw lubricated using a food-safe anti-seize grease.

Like any mechanical lubricant, this should be replaced periodically. Under normal home use we recommend servicing your CoffeeJack approximately once a year, following the dismantling instructions in the servicing video ().

Remove the old grease using kitchen towel or a cotton bud before applying fresh grease. The old grease will often appear black due to microscopic metal particles from normal wear. This is perfectly normal.

If water has entered the body of the CoffeeJack, replace the piston O-ring. Replace any other seals that show signs of wear or damage.

Replacement seals and grease sachets are available from the CoffeeJack website.

See the Maintenance section of the user guide for exploded diagrams and further servicing information.

Do I need freshly roasted beans, or can I use pre-ground coffee?

For the best results, use freshly roasted coffee beans and grind them immediately before brewing.

Most supermarket pre-ground coffee is not fine enough for CoffeeJack.

If you don’t own a suitable grinder, ask a reputable coffee shop to grind the beans for a manual lever espresso machine.

What roast level should I use?

Any roast level can produce excellent coffee—the choice is entirely personal.

Light roasts often produce brighter, fruitier flavours with higher acidity.

Medium and dark roasts generally produce richer flavours and significantly more crema due to their higher oil content.

If your main aim is thick crema, choose at least a medium roast.

Because different roast levels have different densities, you may also need to adjust your coffee dose. Refer to the troubleshooting flowchart for guidance.

Can I use light-roasted coffee?

Absolutely.

Many people prefer the cleaner, brighter flavours of light roasts.

Just bear in mind that light roasts naturally produce much less crema than medium or dark roasts, even when extracted perfectly.

Why am I not getting much crema?

Crema depends on several factors:

• sufficient brewing pressure (typically at least 6 bar)
• freshly roasted beans
• a suitable grind
• and, most importantly, the roast level.

Medium and dark roasts naturally produce far more crema than light roasts because they contain more surface oils.

Do I need to reach 9 bar?

Not necessarily.

For most coffees we recommend maintaining approximately 6–8 bar during extraction.

This generally produces a sweeter, less bitter espresso while still generating excellent crema when using medium or dark roasts.

If you prefer a stronger, more traditional Italian-style espresso, you can certainly extract at 9–10 bar. CoffeeJack is easily capable of achieving these pressures, although the handle becomes noticeably harder to turn and most users find it unnecessary.

Can I make turbo shots?

Yes.

CoffeeJack works extremely well with turbo-style extractions, using a slightly coarser grind and lower extraction pressure.

Because the puck is less compact, take extra care when inverting the prepared basket. Many users find it easier to place the shower screen and gasket onto the basket first before attaching the complete assembly to the water chamber.

How often should I adjust my grinder?

Frequently!

Even once you’ve dialled in a coffee, you’ll usually need to make small adjustments as:

• the beans age;
• you open a new bag of the same coffee;
• you change to a different coffee; or
• you change roast level.

This is why grinders with very fine adjustment increments are highly recommended.

I’m hearing a slight squeak and the handle feels stiff.

The piston screw is fully lubricated before leaving the factory.

During the first few uses, the moving parts naturally bed in as tiny machining marks wear smooth, so the action should become progressively easier.

If the stiffness is only occasional, check that the protective jacket is not rubbing against the gear mechanism. Folding the top edge of the jacket down slightly and applying a few drops of food-safe lubricant (or even a little olive oil) to the upper edge can eliminate any rubbing.

DO NOT FORCE HANDLE

Remember that the handle drives a high torque gearbox inside the machine!

Forcing the handle in the anti-clockwise/clockwise position, past the point at which the piston is at its highest/lowest position will damage internal components.

How to avoid damage: Before using the machine...test! Rotate the handle fully clockwise, this will move the piston to the downward position. When it reaches its stopping point, you will feel strong resistance against the handle as its maximum travel has been reached.

DO NOT continue rotation in the same direction!

Likewise, test the machine in the piston’s upward position by rotating anti-clockwise.

You will feel the same resistance when its maximum position has been reached. These stopping points will soon become clear and you will notice the change in resistance whilst using the machine compared to the resistance created by increasing pressure.

It is highly important that these piston travel points are recognised during pre-loading and extraction.

DO NOT EXCEED 9 BAR

COFFEEJACK V2 has the power capability to exceed 9 Bar by a considerable amount due to the high torque gearbox. However, this is not the goal!

DO NOT EXCEED 9 BAR

The pressure gauge clearly indicates a red warning zone. This warning zone is there for two reasons:

1. To protect internal components of the machine

2. To elimate a poor tasting coffee due to ‘over pressure’ extraction.

Typically, most people extract espresso at around 6-8 bar. Whilst you can safely use the machine at 9 Bar, anything over this pressure will start to extract the bitter notes of the grind and result in a poor tasting espresso shot.

9 Bar is equivelent to 130 PSI. That’s approximately four times the pressure of an average car tyre! Staying within this range ensures that COFFEEJACK V2 users remain safe and the product internals do not become damaged.

REMOVE PORTAFILTER UPWARDS

For your safety and to prevent scalding, it is crucial to always remove the portafilter basket while the COFFEEJACK V2 machine is inverted (upside down). This specific orientation ensures that any hot water remaining after brewing is safely retained within the water chamber, eliminating the risk of spillage and injury.

Before handling the portafilter basket, ensure all components have cooled completely, as this part comes into direct contact with boiling water during operation.

Follow this removal sequence:

1. Detach the ‘Portafilter Holder’.

2. Remove the ‘Portafilter’.

3. To remove the ‘Shower Screen Seal’, gently grasp its outer rubber ring and lift straight up. If it feels stuck, apply lighter pressure and twist carefully.

Ensure the portafilter holder is securely tightened before use, with enough resistance felt as the portafilter engages with the seal. This is a threaded component, so make sure the threads are properly aligned before tightening. Do NOT force the connection if the threading does not turn smoothly; remove it and begin the connection process again.

WARNINGS

READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE USE.

FAILURE TO FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS MAY RESULT IN INJURY OR DAMAGE TO THE MACHINE.

To ensure safe operation and prevent damage to your COFFEEJACK V2 portable espresso machine, please observe the following:

Hot Surfaces & Scalding Hazard:

This appliance contains extremely hot liquids and steam during operation. Always exercise extreme caution when operating. Keep hands and face clear of the dispensing area during operation and when releasing the ‘Portafilter Basket’ after use. Hot water and steam can cause severe burns.

Children and Pets: KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN. This appliance is not intended for use by children. Close supervision is necessary when any appliance is used near children or pets.

Stability & Spillage Prevention:

Do not use COFFEEJACK V2 without the use of a ‘COFFEEJACK Elevation Stand’ and/or ‘COFFEEJACK Tumbler.’ Failure to do so could result in spillage and potential scalding.

Ensure the machine is placed on a flat, solid, and stable surface during filling and extraction, unless being used with the ‘COFFEEJACK Tumbler’. Extraction must always be performed in a static, upright machine position.

Avoid leaving the machine unattended during use.

Pressure Management:

Do not over-restrict the basket. This could result in seal failure if 9 Bar pressure is repeatedly exceeded.

Reduce handle rotation speed immediately if 10 Bar pressure is reached.

Do not remove the basket during use. Allow to sufficiently cool and pressure to dissipate before removal.

Filling Instructions (Boiling Water):

Ensure both hands are clear from the machine before filling with boiling water.

Only pour boiling water into the ‘Water Chamber’ from the bottom of the machine.

Do not fill the gear section with water from the top.

Operation:

Rotate handle only when the machine is in an upright position during extraction.

Inspect the machine before use to ensure sealing components are free from debris or damage.

Maintenance & Cleaning:

Always allow components to cool before cleaning.

Do not damage the ‘Pressure Gauge Bar’ by using cleaning abrasives. This may compromise the high-pressure sealing.

Refer to the user manual ‘MAINTENANCE’ section for detailed cleaning instructions.

Travel & Storage:

Do not travel without protecting the machine in a suitable protective case (eg. COFFEEJACK Travel Case).

When not in use, store the machine in a cool, dry place.

Environmental Conditions: The machine should be used in conditions between -5 °C and 50 °C (23 °F and 122 °F) and under normal atmospheric pressure conditions (0-3000m altitude).

Intended Use & Responsibility:

Do not use the machine for any other purpose than instructed.

COFFEEJACK LTD would decline all responsibility in the event of misuse.

Modifications: Do not attempt to modify or repair the appliance yourself, aside from replacing seals when required

(follow instructions in this manual). Unauthorised modifications may pose safety risks and machine failure.

Do not travel without protecting COFFEEJACK V2 in a safe and secure case.

Do not damage the sealing edge of the basket. The smooth surface is essential to maintaining a high pressure seal.

Allow COFFEEJACK V2 to cool before trying to secure and/or remove the basket. Failure to do so could result in injury from residual hot water within the grind.

Keep away from children.

Avoid leaving the machine unattended during use.

Inspect the machine before use and make sure there is no damage.

If the pressure regulator valve activates (audible sound), reduce pump speed to lower extraction pressure.

Only pour water in the water chamber, NOT the top section where gears are visible.

Do not try to remove the basket during use.

The machine should be used in conditions between 5°C and 50°C (41°F and 122°F), and under normal atmospheric pressure conditions (from 0 to 3000m altitude).

Do not use the machine for any other purpose than instructed. COFFEEJACK would decline all responsibility in event of misuse.
